Help for Homeless

* Re “Spring Not So Sunny for Homeless,” March 8.
The Times’ Valley Edition article by Efrain Hernandez stated that there are an estimated 50,000 to 85,000 homeless persons in Los Angeles County.
In another article printed earlier in the week, Cardinal [Roger M.] Mahony announced that the Catholic Church will be spending $103 million on a new cathedral in downtown Los Angeles.
Take $103 million and divide it by 50,000 persons. The result is $2,060 per homeless person.
What could be done for the homeless with this money is for the social workers to ponder. From our point of view, Cardinal Mahony should be competing with Mother Teresa and not with the Rev. [Robert] Schuller’s massive ego and bloated Crystal Cathedral.
