City officials have narrowed their search for the next Palos Verdes Estates police chief from almost 50 candidates to four and plan to make a final decision by the end of the month, officials said Monday.
Officials have been searching for a top officer to fill the post that Chief Gary Johansen will vacate when he retires from the department April 30. The new chief will be responsible for managing a 23-officer police force and a service area of about five square miles.
The chief’s job pays $72,583 to $81,612 in addition to free rent at a three-bedroom home with an ocean view, pool and guest house. The salary tops out at $96,588 if the chief does not take the house. Officials would not comment on the finalists, but said they are all highly qualified.
“We’re looking for someone who can serve the community and residents in the manner that they are accustomed to,” said Assistant City Manager Judy Smith. “Our residents like a high-level personal service.”
