Repairs for Soldiers’ Barracks

Then again, there are the genuinely historical residences around--such as the 1791 Spanish soldiers’ barracks at Mission San Juan Capistrano.
The adobe bricks and wood-shingle roof have deteriorated so badly that visitors are no longer allowed inside. That will change soon, though, thanks to $300,000 in labor and materials donated by the Orange County chapter of the Building Industry Assn. of Southern California.
BIA/OC members Citation Homes, John Laing Homes and Standard Pacific Corp. will perform the work, including replacing the wood roof with tiles like those originally used. The walls will also be strengthened to meet seismic codes.
The project manager, John Loomis of Thirtieth Street Architects in Newport Beach, said the barracks is the last of the mission buildings to be stabilized. Once restored, the barracks will house an expanded display depicting how the Spanish soldiers once lived, and a community meeting area.
