King’s Widow Asks Clinton for Inquiry

Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow pressed President Clinton to investigate the civil rights leader’s assassination 30 years ago, saying she cannot believe that his convicted killer acted alone. Coretta Scott King told reporters after the White House meeting that Clinton promised to look into the matter but made no commitments. King said the family has been drawn to seek government help after years of anguish and doubt about the assassination. James Earl Ray, who died in April at 70, pleaded guilty to killing King on April 4, 1968, but recanted his confession within days, saying he had been duped as part of a larger plot.
