Most players taken in the amateur draft this week who sign will be sent either to rookie or short-season Class-A teams, which begin play June 16. Players who sign quickly often report to mini-camps at major league spring training sites where they are evaluated.
Short-season Class-A leagues are the New York-Penn League and Northwest League. The top rookie leagues are the Appalachian League and the Pioneer League, and the Arizona League and Gulf Coast League are lower rookie leagues.
