7 Indicted in $12.4-Million Food Stamp Fraud Case

WASHINGTON — Seven people connected to neighborhood grocery stores in Chicago have been indicted by a grand jury for illegally obtaining and redeeming $12.4 million worth of food stamps, the Department of Agriculture said Monday.
Over a period of four years, the defendants allegedly submitted food stamp applications containing false statements and then opened phony bank accounts to redeem the money, said the USDA, which administers the aid program.
