Ventura Falls in Semifinals

The Ventura High wrestling team won the inaugural Southern Section dual-meet championship in 1992.

Since then, it’s been all Santa Ana Calvary Chapel.

The Eagles, defending state champions, defeated Ventura, 45-16, in the Division I dual-meet semifinals Saturday at Ventura. Calvary Chapel followed by winning its sixth consecutive title by defeating Anaheim, 57-6, in the final.

Ventura (18-3), ranked No. 4 in the Southern Section and Channel League champion, reached the semifinals with victories over Santa Ana Valley and Arroyo, despite having three freshmen in the lineup.

Senior Cristobal Gonzalez of Ventura, third in the state last season at 189 pounds, improved to 44-2 with three victories Saturday. Gonzalez defeated Mike Bigrigg of Calvary Chapel, 7-3.

In other dual-meet finals:

Northview 43, Thousand Oaks 12--The Marmonte League champion Lancers were eliminated by second-ranked Northview in the quarterfinals of the Division II meet at Temecula Valley.

Yibing Chen (103), Larry Schneider (145) and Steve Jauregui (215) got the only victories for Thousand Oaks (26-5), which defeated El Toro, 40-36, in a first-round meet.

Bishop Amat 30, Highland 27--Highland, six-time Golden League champion, narrowly failed to repeat as Division IV dual-meet champions, losing in the semifinals at Highland. Bishop Amat defeated Glenn, 36-30, in the final.

Highland (30-5) rallied from a 31-0 deficit against Bishop Amat (24-2-1). Senior Stuart Young recorded his third pin of the meet, stopping Gus Martinez of Bishop Amat in 1:04 at 160 pounds. Young, who improved to 43-5, pinned Mike Aines of Mira Costa in 44 seconds. Highland defeated Mira Costa, 60-17 in a quarterfinal.

MEN’S GOLF

Waikoloa Intercollegiate Tournament--Pepperdine’s Alex Rodger is tied for second place with Jeremy Anderson of Nevada Las Vegas at 137, three strokes behind leader James Watt of Nevada, following 36 holes in Waikoloa, Hawaii.

The Waves are tied for 10th in the tournament at 582. They trail leader UNLV by 17.

TRACK AND FIELD

Holiday Inn Classic--Northridge’s Joe Criner, Christina Tolson and Brandi Prieto all broke their own two-week old school records in their respective events at the annual Reno indoor meet. Criner got an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA indoor championships in the 200 meters in 20.92 seconds, tying Andre Ammons from City College of San Francisco.

Tolson won the shot put with a toss of 52 feet, 7 3/4 inches, with former UCLA standout Dawn Dumble second at 52-2 1/4.

Cheree Hicks was third for the Matadors at 50-8 1/4, just ahead of Beth Burton’s 50-6 3/4 throw.

Burton, a Matador senior, will compete during the outdoor campaign but has used up her indoor eligibility.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 71, Santa Monica 66--Laura Tweedy scored 16 points and Maxine Unverferth added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Canyons (24-7, 10-0), clinching its fourth Western State Conference South title in the past five years.

Portland State 68, Cal State Northridge 65--Edniesha Curry had 20 points and eight assists and Tammie Mills added 18 points for Northridge (11-11, 7-5) in Big Sky Conference action at Portland, Ore.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 114, West L.A. 62--Leon Brisport had 27 points and nine rebounds for host Valley (22-7, 6-2) in a Western State Conference South Division game.

Antelope Valley 101, Barstow 76--John Burrell scored 27 points for Antelope Valley (19-9, 5-1) in a Foothill Conference home game.

Hancock 73, Moorpark 72--Derek Williams made a three-point basket as time expired for host Hancock (10-13, 3-3) in a Western State Conference North Division game.
