* Notable: Last season’s top cross-country runners, seniors Gleason and Lee, will meet in the seeded mile. They didn’t get a chance to compete head-to-head in the Orange County Cross-Country Championships last year, when the race was canceled because Irvine Regional Park was being used as a base for the fire crews fighting October fires in the eastern Orange County foothills. Gleason was the county’s second runner to win a state title last fall, finishing his Division II race at Fresno in 15 minutes 16 seconds; Lee, who was hampered by a leg injury toward the end of the season, was 44th in the Division II state final in 16:20.

* Among county girls’ field participants: Nicole Fallert (Mission Viejo) in high jump; Michelle McCaslin, Caroline Rebello and Katie Rorem (Marina) and Sarah Higham (Mission Viejo) in pole vault; Adrienne Farrington (Rancho Alamitos) and Ashley Bethel and Dana Bethel (Mission Viejo) in long jump; Jenny Wootten (Marina), Armanda Shanklin (Santa Margarita) and Darnesha Griffith (Mission Viejo) in triple jump; Carrie Salski (Laguna Hills) and Suzanne Linn (Trabuco Hills) in shotput (at USC); Kristen Dutwiler (Mission Viejo) and Suzanne Linn (Trabuco Hills) in discus (at USC).

* Notable: Ashley Bethel qualified for three events at last year’s state track and field championships, where she finished fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles, seventh in the long jump and eighth in the high jump. Bethel, a senior, will compete for the first time at the high school level against her sister, Dana, a freshman.
