Indoor Track and Field Meet

* What: The 38th Los Angeles Invitational indoor track and field meet, which will feature world-class competitors, collegiate standouts and nearly 2,000 high school athletes

* Among county boys’ track participants: Mike Chavis (Mission Viejo) and Julius Williams (Tustin) in 50-meter dash; DeShaun Foster (Tustin) in football 50-meter dash; Garrett Thompson (Santa Margarita) and Terrance Felix (Irvine) in 500; Devin Lindahl (Dana Hills) and Jonathan West (Sonora) in 880; C.J. * Notable: Last season’s top cross-country runners, seniors Gleason and Lee, will meet in the seeded mile. They didn’t get a chance to compete head-to-head in the Orange County Cross-Country Championships last year, when the race was canceled because Irvine Regional Park was being used as a base for the fire crews fighting October fires in the eastern Orange County foothills. Gleason was the county’s second runner to win a state title last fall, finishing his Division II race at Fresno in 15 minutes 16 seconds; Lee, who was hampered by a leg injury toward the end of the season, was 44th in the Division II state final in 16:20.

* County girls’ track participants: Meryel Stone (Woodbridge), Brooke Fitzgerald and Meghan Atkinson (Santa Margarita) in 50-meter dash; Maika Nelson (Brea Olinda), Angela Allen (El Modena) and Christina Ciampa (San Clemente) in 500; Jessica Dahlberg (El Modena), Lis Moore (Corona del Mar), Christine Ruby (Los Alamitos), Allison Henisey (Santa Margarita), Vanessa Hernandez (Troy), Pam Smith (Esperanza), Kendal Billingsley (Mission Viejo) and Lisa Dunn (Troy) in rated mile; Heather Cuthbertson (Marina) and Heather Garritson (Buena Park) in seeded mile; Mary Moore (Woodbridge), Lisa Massoth (Esperanza), Dani Ropes (Santa Margarita) and Leslie Burton (El Modena) in two-mile; Mila Schulenburg (Irvine), Ashley Bethel and Dana Bethel (Mission Viejo) and Kristin Deathridge (Fountain Valley) in 50-meter hurdles.

* Among county girls’ field participants: Nicole Fallert (Mission Viejo) in high jump; Michelle McCaslin, Caroline Rebello and Katie Rorem (Marina) and Sarah Higham (Mission Viejo) in pole vault; Adrienne Farrington (Rancho Alamitos) and Ashley Bethel and Dana Bethel (Mission Viejo) in long jump; Jenny Wootten (Marina), Armanda Shanklin (Santa Margarita) and Darnesha Griffith (Mission Viejo) in triple jump; Carrie Salski (Laguna Hills) and Suzanne Linn (Trabuco Hills) in shotput (at USC); Kristen Dutwiler (Mission Viejo) and Suzanne Linn (Trabuco Hills) in discus (at USC).

* Notable: Ashley Bethel qualified for three events at last year’s state track and field championships, where she finished fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles, seventh in the long jump and eighth in the high jump. Bethel, a senior, will compete for the first time at the high school level against her sister, Dana, a freshman.
