McNown criticized his hometown of Hollister, Calif., in a Sports Illustrated article, but he says he was misquoted.
In the magazine’s annual college football preview, McNown was quoted as saying, “People are born in [Hollister], they live their whole lives in that town, and they die in that town because they’re afraid to try anything else.”
McNown played for Hollister High from 1991-93 before moving for his senior year to West Linn, Ore., where he set Oregon high school passing records.
