My Favorite Weekend

Changing Times: Before I had kids, my weekends were filled with watching Yankee games and cuddling up with Madonna, one of my famous friends. No, seriously, my weekends have changed a lot since my two sons (ages 4 and 1) were born. My strategy is to keep them up as late as possible Friday and Saturday nights so my wife and I can sleep late in the mornings.
Like Father, Like Son: I love taking my 4-year-old son to Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard. I try to turn him on to things I like to do. I check out the guitars and my kid makes noise in the Drum Shop. We look at the Rock of Fame, but to him it’s just bad concrete. We also go to a lot of hardware stores, especially Koontz on Santa Monica Boulevard.
Burning the Midnight Oil: I’m a total late-nik, up until all hours reading and writing. I end up being groggy all day because I have such weird hours. Then I get jacked up on coffee and I’m up till 6 a.m. again. Luckily, I can get Yankee games on the radio in my computer, so I listen to them while I write.
Posh Parks: I take my kids to the park a lot on the weekends. I push them for what seems like hours on the swings. It’s funny. At L.A. parks you look up and see Annette Bening pushing next to you.
Weekend Envy: I always feel like people are doing more than me on the weekends; like I should be feeding the poor, going to the Lilith Fair, or training for the marathon (except I would run 27 miles instead of the usual 26). But most of the time I’m just re-energizing or hanging out with my kids. Boring stuff.
Free Time: I spend a lot of time thinking about working out, but very little time actually doing it. We were into flying kites for a couple of weeks. My kids and I would chase one another. That was exercise. We are not beach people either, though we do spend a lot of time trying to scam our way into friends’ swimming pools. I recently shaved my beard, which I hadn’t done in 15 years. That was exciting!
