Cubs Make Gaetti’s Birthday With a Deal for Rest of Season

The Chicago Cubs gave Gary Gaetti a 40th birthday present Wednesday, signing him for the rest of the season.
St. Louis designated the third baseman for assignment Aug. 8, and he was released Friday.
Details of the contract were not disclosed. To make room for Gaetti, the Cubs optioned infielder Jose Nieves to triple-A Iowa.
Gaetti, who turned 40 Wednesday, was batting .265 with 11 homers and 43 runs batted in with the Cardinals.

The Florida Marlins put rookie reliever Matt Mantei on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right ankle suffered in Tuesday’s loss to San Diego while covering home plate. The Marlins recalled right-hander Rafael Medina from triple-A Charlotte. He will start today against the Dodgers. . . . The Colorado Rockies returned right-hander David Cortes, acquired from Atlanta in July, to the Braves for a player to be named.
