Governor Ousts City Official After Trial

Gov. Lawton Chiles issued an order removing Miami City Commissioner Humberto Hernandez from office, after he was convicted of involvement in a vote fraud scandal. Already suspended from his post, a jury acquitted Hernandez on charges of fabricating evidence and conspiracy in the city’s vote fraud scandal, but found him guilty of being an accessory after the fact, a misdemeanor. State prosecutors alleged that in the city’s November 1997 election, Hernandez had hidden a ballot fraud scam intended to retain his control of City Hall.
