JACUMBA, Calif. — A U.S. Border Patrol agent was the target of Molotov cocktails thrown from the Mexican side of the border, but he was not hurt, authorities said.
No one has been arrested in the Tuesday night attack, the Border Patrol said Wednesday.
About 8:30 p.m., the agent was driving along a border road in Jacumba, about 75 miles east of San Diego, when he noticed an upside-down pail on the road. When he stopped to examine the pail, he spotted a man standing on the other side of the border fence.
The man threw a flammable container that bounced off the hood of the agent’s truck and exploded after hitting the ground, the Border Patrol said.
The agent then took off, getting away as three more Molotov cocktails were hurled at him.
The explosions started fires in the surrounding brush.
As firefighters from the Jacumba Fire Department fought the blazes, rocks were thrown at them from across the border. The firefighters retreated, and then four more Molotov cocktails were thrown but failed to ignite.
