Bookstore to Stop Selling Adult Material

After battling with area residents and city officials, a Sherman Oaks bookstore will cease selling adult material Sunday.
In accordance with an agreement with city officials, Circus of Books, 14760 Ventura Blvd., will stop offering adult merchandise for sale or rent no later than 12:01 a.m. Sunday and probably will close shortly afterward.
“This is entirely an economic decision by my client,” said John Weston, attorney for Circus of Books owner Barry Mason Enterprises Inc. “They just decided to move in a different business direction.”
The agreement evolved from a city Building and Safety Department order instructing the bookstore to stop selling pornographic material because the store is situated too close to Sherman Oaks Elementary School, said Sharon Mayer, aide to Councilman Mike Feuer.
Zoning laws forbid adult businesses from locating within 500 feet of a school or religious establishment.
