Parking to Be Banned in Front of School

The city plans to prohibit parking along a stretch of Cerritos Avenue in front of Los Alamitos High School so parents can drop off and pick up students.
Parking will be banned between the lot entrance and exits on Cerritos Avenue, but drivers may stop briefly to load passengers, said Police Sgt. Rod McKenzie, a traffic officer assigned to study the issue. The change will eliminate room for about 20 vehicles.
The move, approved by the City Council on Monday, also bans stopping on the east side of Los Alamitos Boulevard north of Cerritos Avenue and the faculty parking lot driveway.
Designating pickup areas will help the city “create a safer environment in and around the school,” McKenzie said.
The city plans to post signs before classes start in September. Curbs will not be painted red.
Though school officials could not be reached Tuesday, City Manager Robert Dominguez said administrators endorse the changes.
“We worked with the school to make sure there wasn’t any problem, and they agreed,” he said.
