Base Commissary Gets Supervisors’ Support

Whether or not the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station becomes an airport, the Board of Supervisors will likely ask the federal government to keep the base’s commissary open for the 120,000 military personnel and retirees in Orange County.
The Department of Defense has scheduled the commissary for closure, to the dismay of many veterans. Supervisors hope that their appeal will help prevent closure.
“The county is willing to make the land available or do whatever we can to keep the commissary at El Toro,” said Supervisor Charles V. Smith. “We want to support keeping the commissary there.”
The commissary, which sells food and clothing to military personnel at discount prices, is used heavily by veterans on limited budgets.
The board will discuss the issue at its meeting Tuesday.
