F. Andy Messing Jr. and Dillon Twombly’s contention that we should give more military aid to Colombia is appalling (Commentary, Aug. 3). The U.S. has been supplying Colombia’s government with military equipment and advice for years in the futile effort to eradicate drug crops; the result has been an increase in anti-American sentiment as they perceive the U.S. as interfering with their sovereignty, and an increase in the drug traffickers’ power as they fund the guerrilla army that has overrun much of the country.
If “narco-guerrillas” do indeed become rulers of Colombia, the U.S.--in particular those who lead the war on drugs--will partly be to blame.
