Adrian Wooldridge may be correct in his “Decline and Fall: Will Sun Set on U.S. Empire?” (Opinion, Aug. 2), reflecting on the parallels between the U.S. today and England before the fall; however, he leaves a “major player” out of the equation. In Victorian England there was a young upstart across the Atlantic just waiting to take over.
Until Japan’s recent problems, it was considered by many as the likely heir apparent to the U.S. in the 21st century.
