The latest places to be scene:
Deuces. It didn’t take Sean Penn long to get out of the club business--nary more than a year--and now at his former McInerneys club comes Deuces, a 3-month-old supper club and night spot open Wednesday through Saturday, with a popular R&B; dance club Fridays. 2020 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, (310) 829-1933. 21 and over, cover varies.
Fenix at the Argyle Hotel. The weekends are jumping at the Fenix, a formerly sedate bar in the Argyle. The cause for the tremors is the takeover by Grand Ville co-promoter Rick Calamaro, who knows what L.A. really wants: to party like it’s 1999 (or is that ‘89?). To be on the guest list, call in advance. 8358 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, (323) 848-6677 or (323) 654-7100. 21 and over, no cover.
Fix 31 at the Fix. This Friday night club, run by promoters Shane Powers and Gregg Wadley, debuted last week with a casual young industry set grooving to a little bit of hip-hop, a little bit of ‘80s, and dining on a little bit of the Cali cuisine served at the Fix. 6266 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, (323) 465-5349. 21 and over, $10 cover.
The Joint. Kinda London undergroundy, kinda Bronx-style cool, this intimate new nightclub offers four bands a night, seven nights a week. The Joint’s high ceiling and disco balls a-plenty go nicely with its brand-new sound system. 8771 W. Pico Blvd., (310) 275-2619. 21 and over, cover varies.
Miyagi’s. Leave it to Larry Pollack, the 26-year-old wunderkind who brought the Sunset Strip the popular watering hole Dublin’s Irish Whisky Pub to take over the Roxbury and revamp it into a rock ‘n’ roll sushi and teppanyaki hot spot. The week-old, three-level spot has music on each floor and reasonable prices. 8225 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, (323) 650-3524. All ages, no cover.
North. Once an old school hustler bar called the Numbers, North was opened by the folks who own the ever-popular Three Clubs and has been revamped into a fabo’ yuppie bar, where the drinks are pricey and the ambience nicely upgraded. 8029 W. Sunset Blvd.; phone is unlisted. 21 and over, no cover.
Rubber at Key Club. Last week’s grand opening gala for this erotic Friday night dance club left 350 would-be partiers out in the cold--actually, it was warm, but they couldn’t get in--and police helicopters were launched to clear the area. 9039 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, (310) 786-1712. 21 and over, call for cover.
