A 9-year-old girl was wounded Sunday during what authorities described as an accidental shooting in her Dana Point home.
The incident occurred shortly before 9:40 a.m. in the 34000 block of Selva Road, where the girl suffered a gunshot wound just above her left knee.
Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials refused to say who fired the gun or to whom the weapon belonged.
Early police reports that the homeowner is a California Highway Patrol officer who took the injured girl to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center were not confirmed later in the day.
“We’re still investigating this and we don’t have all of that information yet,” Sheriff’s Lt. Hector Rivera said. “I don’t know why it would matter if the relative is a CHP officer anyway.”
The girl, whose name was not released, remained in good condition at the hospital Sunday.
