Brown Beats Expos

MONTREAL — San Diego Padre Manager Bruce Bochy wasn’t going to push Kevin Brown’s pitch count too far.
Brown won his 10th consecutive decision with relief help from Dan Miceli and Trevor Hoffman, and Greg Vaughn hit his 38th home run as the Padres defeated the Montreal Expos, 5-4, Friday night.
“It was getting up there [115] and it was a rough travel day--we didn’t get in until around four,” Bochy said. “[Brown] had done his job and Miceli’s been throwing well.”
Brown (13-3) struck out 10 for the second consecutive game and the third time in four starts, giving up four runs and seven hits without a walk in seven innings. Brown improved his strikeout total to 169, third in the league.
Vaughn followed Ken Caminiti’s two-run homer in the first inning with his homer to give Brown a 3-0 lead. Catcher Carlos Hernandez drove in two runs for the Padres.
