Man to Be Arraigned in Stabbing of Cat

A Santa Paula man remains free after being ordered to appear at an arraignment in Ventura Municipal Court on Tuesday on charges that he used a pocketknife to stab his pet cat, police said Wednesday.
Kenneth McGowan, 59, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of animal cruelty after police investigated a complaint that his cat, Paint, was stabbed in the back April 14, Santa Paula Police Cmdr. Bob Gonzales said.
McGowan surrendered at the Police Department after he was asked to come to the station for questioning, Gonzales said. A judge released McGowan on his own recognizance early Wednesday, according to a deputy at Ventura County Jail.
McGowan allegedly stabbed the cat after it urinated on a bed in McGowan’s mobile home on Richmond Road, Gonzales said. The man’s wife, who was not home when the stabbing occurred, called Humane League workers, who rescued the cat.
The cat is being cared for by the league’s cat director, Julie Robinson, in Oxnard. The cat received stitches and is recovering, Robinson said.
