Golden West Extends Lead in Swimming

Golden West men’s swimming team broke three conference records as the Rustlers continued to dominate the South Coast Conference Swimming Championships Friday at El Camino College.
Golden West has 576 points after the second day and leads second-place Cerritos by 200 points.
Albert Sutanto broke the conference record in the 100-yard butterfly, winning in 49.16 seconds. One event later, Vicha Ratanachote swam a record 1 minute 39.41 seconds in the 200 freestyle.
Golden West’s 800 freestyle relay team of Sutanto, Ratanachote, Felix Sutanto and Chris Burress won in a record 6:52.45.
The Rustlers also widened their lead in the women’s competition, finishing the second day with 451 points. Mt. San Antonio is second with 336 points. Golden West’s Susan Lehman won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.70. Teammate Becky Levine won the 200 freestyle in 1:58.23.
In the Orange Empire Conference swimming championships:
Orange Coast teams second--Gus Fowler won the 100 butterfly in 52.59 as the Orange Coast men’s team (477 points) finished the second day of competition at Saddleback, trailing Grossmont by 32 points. Teammate James Comfort won the backstroke (53.59).
After being tied for first, the Pirate women’s team dropped into second place, 20 1/2 points behind Riverside. The Pirates won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:40.56.
In Orange Empire Conference women’s softball:
Cypress 1, Santa Ana 0--Mandy Rockwell struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in a one-hitter for host Cypress (45-5, 18-2). Pinch runner Nicole Dye scored in the second on Ro Lutz’s sacrifice fly. Santa Ana is 19-17, 12-8.
Fullerton 4, Orange Coast 3--Crystal Aguirre’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in Marisa Ornelas with the winning run. Ornelas reached base on a one-out infield single and then stole second. Lindsay Huebner’s sacrifice bunt moved Ornelas to third.
Michel Harrison (19-10) pitched three scoreless relief innings for Fullerton. The Hornets are 25-15, 14-6. The Pirates are 10-24, 1-19.
Ornelas, who had two doubles to extend her hitting streak to 21 games, also set the single-season record for stolen bases with 42.
Saddleback 3, Riverside 1--With the bases loaded and one out in the first, Saddleback’s Nikki Nunes grounded to Riverside pitcher Mandy Dorrow, who threw home for the forceout. Catcher Angela Ferreira then tried to get Nunes at first, but threw the ball away. The ball got by the right fielder and three runs scored for the Gauchos (25-10, 14-6).
