Water District Worker Gets Chemistry Award

Yvonne Shen, director of the laboratory at the Orange County Water District in Fountain Valley, has won a chemistry award for her research on contaminated drinking water.
The American Chemical Society gave her the Service Through Chemistry Award for her work on water containing methyl tertiary-butyl ether, a chemical used since the 1970s as a gasoline additive that reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Though it benefits the air, it contaminates ground water when it leaks from tanks and pipes.
