A week after emerging as the top vote-getter in City Council elections, Gary Kovacic was chosen by his council colleagues to be mayor.
Three new council members--Gail Marshall, Gino Roncelli and Roger Chandler--were sworn in Tuesday night and, along with Councilman Robert Harbicht, swiftly selected Kovacic to take the ceremonial mayor’s chair.
Kovacic will serve a year as mayor. He garnered more than 4,000 votes in the April 14 election for a four-year term on the council.
In his first address as mayor, Kovacic on Tuesday called for an Intercultural Commission for the city, which has a growing Asian population, and a citizens advisory committee to help study the city finances.
