‘Angels’ Goes on the Rise

Another collection of music from a box-office leader is climbing the national album sales chart in pursuit of “Titanic.” The “City of Angels” soundtrack sold about 152,000 copies last week to jump from No. 7 to No. 3.
Featuring songs by Alanis Morissette, U2 and Peter Gabriel, among others, “City of Angels” was the only album among the Top 10 that experienced a sales climb from the previous week. (For more on the “Titanic” soundtrack sales phenomenon, see Page 46.)
What’s Hot
Bonnie Raitt’s “Fundamental” (Capitol). Strip away the fancy production touches and you’re left with more of the same lovelorn roots-rock that Raitt’s been playing for nearly a decade.
Various artists’ “I Got the Hook-Up!” soundtrack (No Limit/Priority). The treats are few in this mixed-bag collection of angst-riddled raps and whiny R&B; melodies compiled for rapper-mogul Master P’s second independent film.
What’s New
Various artists’ “Bulworth: Music From the Motion Picture” (Interscope), Page & Plant’s “Walking Into Clarksdale” (Atlantic), Randy Travis’ “You and You Alone” (DreamWorks), George Strait’s “One Step at a Time” (MCA Nashville).
What’s Coming
Tuesday: Dave Matthews Band’s “Before These Crowded Streets” (RCA), Public Enemy’s “He Got Game” soundtrack (Def Jam/PolyGram), Various artists’ “Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music” (Arista).
