Work on Project at Former Navy Site Begins

Work on a multimillion-dollar research and training project was begun Monday at Cal State Long Beach on land that had housed U.S. Navy personnel.

The 32-acre research park will include 600,000 square feet of facilities, including a Center for the Commercial Deployment of Transportation Technologies, the Center for Protection Against Natural Disasters and a Manufacturing Learning Center. The projects will attract private industry users and provide training programs for residents, officials said.

The university, using $3.2 million in federal grants, is converting old U.S. Navy housing in Long Beach along Pacific Coast Highway into offices. The surplus military property was turned over to the university in July 1996.
