Cost of Starr Probe Has Hit $35 Million

The cost of independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr’s Whitewater investigation hit $35 million through last September. An audit by the General Accounting Office shows the government spent nearly $8 million running six investigations by independent counsels in the six months ended last Sept. 30. Starr’s investigation was the most expensive during the period, with $3.4 million for salaries, travel, rent and other expenses. FBI agents working with Starr cost another $485,927 and the Internal Revenue Service spent $67,063 helping Starr, the GAO found.
