Rolling Readers

I wanted to echo and amplify the sentiment of the Oct. 15 article regarding child literacy and the Rolling Readers program. I began volunteering with Rolling Readers last February. Once a week, I spend an hour at Gratts Elementary School near downtown Los Angeles. I split the time between two classes, with ages ranging from 7 to 11. While it sometimes means making up an hour or two at the office, it is the most rewarding experience of my life. The children sincerely enjoy being read to and I cherish the responsive laughter and shrieking. The looks on my classes’ faces last spring when they learned they got to keep a book and take it home were priceless.
I strongly urge everyone to participate. This isn’t about politics, it’s about helping to provide the tools and motivation to the next generation.
