From Times Wire Reports
Muslim fundamentalist rebels armed with knives and guns killed more than 70 people and wounded 103 in two villages within 45 miles of Algiers, the capital, newspapers reported. Many of the victims reportedly choked to death after having their throats cut. The attacks were apparently carried out in revenge for a military offensive in which scores of rebels--300, by one estimate--died in the past two weeks. There was no government confirmation of the rebel attacks.
