Taking Stock
Carolyn and Harry Lundgren have no children and a sizable estate, thanks to Carolyn’s wise investments in the stock market (B1). So the Ventura residents are giving hundreds of thousands of dollars away to those in need. . . . The latest recipient of their charitable impulses was the music department at Ventura College. The pair donated $30,000 to buy the school a grand piano and provide scholarships.
Ill Inmate
It happens all too often, mental health advocates say: mentally ill people stop taking their medication, break the law and wind up in jail because they cannot control themselves. . . . One such inmate’s father says he refuses to bail his son--a two-time felon--out of jail (B1). Norman Pollak of Westlake says he fears son Martin Pollak will commit another crime and face a life sentence under California’s three-strikes law.
Trial Run
Thanks to Cal Lutheran University’s Upward Bound summer program, Camarillo resident Jason Ho is getting a jump-start on college (B2). Jason is one of 105 students enrolled in the federally funded, tuition-free advanced learning program for highly motivated high school students. . . . Students, who live on campus, take a heavy course load, including a two-hour study hall each evening. “I’ve learned more so I can have an edge over everybody else,” says Jason, who will attend UC Berkeley this fall.
Bumps or Humps?
We often discover them when it’s too late to slow down, but once we hit them we never forget where they are (B1). Speed bumps and speed humps (there is a difference) are on our list of least-favorite traffic-control devices. But Street Smart dutifully tells you how to bring them to your neighborhood.
Weather
Partly cloudy to mostly clear. Highs to the low 90s. B7
