Residential Trash Bills Will Be Shaved 6 Cents

Residents’ next trash bills will be a few pennies less. The City Council voted this week to pass along the savings that will result from the county’s reduction in landfill fees.
The new trash rate is $15.94 a month, down from $16. The fee was as high as $16.46 right after the county’s 1994 bankruptcy filing, which precipitated a temporary rise in landfill and other fees.
Mayor John J. Collins said: “We could have kept the money, but instead we just passed on the savings,” which will amount to about $5,500 a year.
In other action this week, the City Council introduced an ordinance aimed at business owners that would make violation of conditional-use permits a criminal offense.
A public hearing on the issue is set for July 15.
That day the council will also consider an ordinance that would tighten restrictions on what residents dump into their gutters, a move to reduce water pollution and comply with environmental laws.
