Third-Ranked Woodbridge Topples No. 1 Santa Ana in Soccer

Woodbridge, ranked third in Orange County, scored a goal late in the second half to defeat top-ranked Santa Ana, 1-0, in a nonleague boys’ soccer game Monday at Santa Ana High.
Kevin Friedland scored on a header off an assist from Saul Wolf in the 77th minute for Woodbridge (4-0-2). Santa Ana is 4-1.
In other nonleague games:
Estancia 1, Katella 0--Playing two players short because of red cards, Noe Estrada scored off a pass from Cesar Terrones with 10 minutes remaining for Estancia (4-0-1). Katella is 1-3-2.
Huntington Beach 2, Mission Viejo 1--Freshman Drew McAthy scored a first-half goal and assisted on A.J. Ruiz’s goal for host Huntington Beach (2-2-1).
In the championship game of the Burbank Burroughs tournament:
Servite 1, Simi Valley Royal 0 (2 OT)--Keith Buckley scored in sudden-death from 18 yards out for Servite (7-0). Morgan Jassen recorded his fifth shutout.
In the Long Beach Millikan tournament:
El Dorado 1, Lakewood 0--Ignacio Cid scored with 15 minutes remaining in the game to help Mark Wade and El Dorado (5-1) earn their fourth consecutive shutout.
In the Magnolia girls’ soccer tournament:
Kennedy 1, Marina 0 (Kennedy wins on penalty kicks, 5-4)--After playing to a scoreless tie, Jihan Elgazzar made one save during the shootout and made nine saves in the game for Kennedy (5-3-1), unbeaten in the last six games.
In the Vanguard Cup:
Brea Olinda 2, El Modena 1 (OT)--Tennli Ulicny scored with three minutes remaining in overtime for Brea (3-1).
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
No. 5 El Toro 1, University 0--Lauren Orlandos scored in the first minute for El Toro (4-2).
Valencia 4, Moorpark 2--Heather Zubs scored two goals for Valencia (2-2).
In the Gary Raya Coed Classic boys’ basketball tournament:
Aliso Niguel 93, Corona 83 (OT)--J.J. Sola had 28 points and nine rebounds for Aliso Niguel (5-3).
El Dorado 70, Edmonton (Alberta) McNally 42--Mike Gartner scored 20 points for El Dorado (4-3).
El Toro 54, Santa Ana Valley 49--Justin Butler scored 18 points to lead El Toro (5-1) in the first-round game.
Esperanza 75, Pomona Ganesha 52--Kenny Ho scored 18 points for Esperanza (3-3).
In the first round of the Sonora Cage Classic:
No. 3 Tustin 82, Rancho Alamitos 32--Peter Johnston scored 15 of his 21 points in the first quarter when Tustin (7-0) took a 34-8 lead.
No. 4 Sonora 96, Westminster 60--Jeffrey Berokoff scored 22 points and Marqui Worthy added 21 for Sonora (6-1).
Cypress 52, Valencia 51--Chris Heil’s free throw with four seconds remaining brought Cypress back from a 43-33 fourth-quarter deficit to win the first-round game.
Villa Park 90, Long Beach Millikan 49--Alex Will scored 24 points and added seven assists for Villa Park (4-2). Alan Verzani added 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Spartans.
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
Trabuco Hills 67, Costa Mesa 46--Ryan Webster had 19 points, including five three-pointers, and Brandon Martin had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Trabuco Hills (4-2). Travis Rice scored 17 points for Costa Mesa (1-5).
Laguna Hills 58, Dana Hills 56--Josh Pierson made two free throws with seven seconds left to break a 56-56 tie and the Hawks (5-1) held on for the victory. Pierson finished with a game-high 21 points. Tim McKee led Dana Hills (3-3) with 18 points.
In the first round of the La Quinta girls’ basketball tournament:
Edison 63, Saddleback 37--Michelle Zylstra scored 14 points to lead undefeated Edison (7-0).
In the Gary Raya Coed Classic:
El Dorado 68, Fullerton 21--Jennie Bluth scored 16 points and Stephanie Patten added 15 for El Dorado (5-1).
In nonleague games:
No. 7 El Toro 57, Costa Mesa 31--Guiliana Mendiola scored 23 points for visiting El Toro.
No. 6 Mater Dei 73, Huntington Beach 56--Cassie Pappas scored a game-high 18 points for host Mater Dei (4-2).
Loara 55, Magnolia 40--Carrie Banister and Jessica Miles each scored 18 points to lead the visiting Saxons (6-2).
Santa Margarita 56, Foothill 31--Kate Toman scored 18 points for Santa Margarita (6-2).
