A Waterworld on the Field of Dreams

The infield at Milwaukee’s County Stadium was an island Saturday, the ballpark flooded by torrential rain that deluged the region and overwhelmed a drainage tunnel that flows into Lake Michigan.
More than seven inches of rain fell overnight, and because the water had nowhere to empty, the field looked like a swamp. Freshly cut grass floated atop the water, knee-deep in most spots.
The game between the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers was postponed--on what would have been umbrella night.
“They should have made it surfboard night,” Milwaukee first baseman Dave Nilsson said.

Frank Thomas expects to come off the disabled list and play today for the Chicago White Sox.
Thomas, leading the league with a .391 average, has been out since straining an abdominal muscle on June 6. He also has 16 home runs and 55 runs batted in.
“I think I’m ready,” Thomas said after taking batting practice before Saturday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins. “Unless I wake up with some serious soreness . . . but I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
