West, Douglas Play Bookends for Bell-Jeff

Mike West got things started and Ruben Douglas finished the job for the Bell-Jeff High boys’ basketball team in a 46-34 victory over Beverly Hills in the first round of the L.A. Watts Summer Games on Saturday at L.A. Jordan High.
West, a 6-foot-6 forward, scored 16 of the Guards’ 17 points in the first half and finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Bell-Jeff led, 17-12, at halftime.
West’s early play picked up the slack for Bell-Jeff, which was without standout guard Ruben Douglas in the first half.
Douglas mistakenly went to Long Beach Jordan High before realizing the game was at L.A. Jordan. He arrived in time to get 19 points, four assists and three rebounds.
Bell-Jeff got six assists from Tyrone Barton. The Guards advanced to today’s second round against host L.A. Jordan at 9 a.m.
Channel Islands 57, Belmont 55--O.J. Thomas sank a three-point shot with one second remaining to lift the Raiders at Fremont High.
Birmingham 42, Westminster 28--Emmanuel Evans scored 20 points for the Braves at Hamilton High.
The score was tied, 16-16, at halftime, but Birmingham pulled away in the second half.
The Braves will face the Westchester B team at noon today.
BASEBALL
Highland 8, Rialto 5--Tony Ciriello had three hits and two stolen bases, John Anello had two hits and drove in a run, and Jon Santor had a double and three runs batted in for Highland in a first-round game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Carson 4, Burbank 3--Nick Jastrow hit a two-run triple with one out in the third inning to pull Burbank to within 4-3, but the next two batters struck out and flied out.
Jacob Sheffield had two hits, including a double, for the Bulldogs. Right-hander Jesse Perez pitched a six-hitter, walking two and striking out two.
Arlington 9, Ventura 6--Scott Robinson had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs and Brandon Wenger added two doubles for Ventura at Westchester High.
Norco 15, Channel Islands 14--Jared Krehbiel went four for five and drove in three runs for Channel Islands, but the Raiders lost a 12-6 lead at Palisades High.
Channel Islands scored eight runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Jason Contreras.
Norco, however, scored six runs in the top of the sixth to tie the score, 12-12, and added three runs in the seventh. Channel Islands scored single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Ryan Martinez and Bo Apadaca each had two hits for the Raiders.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Mira Costa 1, Thousand Oaks 0--Goalkeeper Dan Grimm had seven saves for Thousand Oaks in a second-round match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Mira Costa scored in the 40th minute of the 50-minute game.
Arcadia 0, Agoura 0--Goalkeeper Danny Brockdorf had 12 saves for Agoura, but the Chargers lost on penalty kicks, 4-2, in a second-round match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Jeff Moskowitz and Aaron Pruter converted penalty kicks in the shootout for Agoura.
