Rusedski Wins in Britain, but Few Fans See Match

Greg Rusedski, Canadian born but now a British citizen, won his first title in Britain when he defeated Karol Kucera, 6-4, 7-5, Saturday in the Nottingham Open in England.

The tournament, a traditional grass-court warmup for Wimbledon, was moved inside because of rain. The indoor tennis arena, however, was too small to accommodate fans and only a few were able to see the semifinal and final by peeking through the windows.

Defending Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek continued his sharp play with an easy victory over Michael Chang, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 6-4, to advance to today’s final of the Heineken Trophy at Rosmalen, Netherlands.

Krajicek will face Guillaume Raoux, who upset Jonas Bjorkman, 6-0, 6-1, in the other semifinal.

The final of the WTA tournament between third-seeded Ruxandra Dragomir and unseeded Miriam Oremans was stopped because of rain with Dragomir up a break in the final set, 5-7, 6-2, 3-1. The match will be completed today.

Ten years after winning the title, Pat Cash qualified for this year’s Wimbledon by turning a 3-0 final-set deficit against Israel’s Oren Motevassel into a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory at Wimbledon, England. Cash needed a wild card into the qualifying tournament after his world ranking slipped to 433 because of long periods of inactivity caused by injury.

Jana Novotna and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario both recorded two victories to meet in today’s rain-delayed final of the Eastbourne women’s grass-court championship in England as the tournament spilled into an extra day.

Sanchez Vicario first defeated sixth-seeded Irina Spirlea, then beat Brenda Schultz-McCarthy, who had upset top seed and defending champion Monica Seles earlier in the day. Novotna had to beat Ai Sugiyama and then defeat Natasha Zvereva.

Bjorn Borg defeated Joakim Nystrom, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the final of the ATP Senior Tour at Prague, Czech Republic. Borg will play Andres Gomez, who defeated Gene Mayer in the other semifinal.

Doug Northway, a former Olympic bronze medalist in swimming who has been a coach in recent years, has been sentenced to four months in jail for attempted molestation of a 9-year-old girl in Tucson.

Northway won his medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the 1972 Munich Games and swam in the 800-meter freestyle relay team at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

San Francisco 49er fullback William Floyd was acquitted of drunk-driving charges but was sentenced to two years of probation and 50 hours of community service for weapons charges stemming from his October arrest.

Southern University track Coach Johnny Thomas was sued for sexual harassment in a lawsuit claiming he patted, pinched or kissed at least 30 women on the track team.

In one of the bigger upsets in South American soccer, Peru defeated two-time World Cup champion Argentina, 2-1, at Sucre, Bolivia, to advance to the semifinals of the America Cup.

Three Argentina players were expelled, and Marcelo Gallardo missed a penalty kick three minutes into the second half.

Marco Antonio Etcheverry and Edwin Sanchez had first-half goals as Bolivia advanced with a 2-1 victory over Colombia at La Paz.

In Wednesday’s semifinals, Peru will play the winner of today’s game between Brazil and Paraguay, while Bolivia will face the winner of today’s game between Mexico and Ecuador.
