24 Palestinians Hurt in Spreading Unrest

Israeli troops firing rubber bullets wounded 24 Palestinian demonstrators armed with stones and firebombs as unrest flared again in Hebron and erupted as well in Nablus, witnesses and hospital sources said. The Hebron unrest was renewed when dozens of Palestinians charged at Israeli troops on the dividing line between Israeli- and Palestinian-run sectors. Violence has erupted every day for a week in the divided city that is home to 100,000 Palestinians and 450 Jewish settlers. The clashes began after a U.S. congressional vote demanded that President Clinton recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In Nablus, thousands of Palestinians condemned the U.S. vote. Palestinians want traditionally Arab East Jerusalem as their capital.
