U.S., Russia Agree to Push New Sanctions

Following a deal struck between President Clinton and Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin, the U.N. Security Council decided to vote on whether to threaten further sanctions against Iraq as punishment for barring international weapons inspectors. Although the agreement was weaker than the United States and Britain first proposed, both nations were satisfied that a vote would be taken on a tougher resolution than the council has adopted over the past year. Russia had threatened to veto their original text while France would have abstained. A senior U.S. official said a deal had been reached resolution between Clinton and Yeltsin, who were in Denver attending the Summit of the Eight, a meeting of leaders of top industrialized nations.
