Night School--Edible insects, reptiles from around the world and rescuing marine animals are some of the topics of the Oak Canyon Nature Center’s “Nature Nights” summer series which runs on Wednesday evenings, June 25 through Sept. 10. Presentations begin at 7:30 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheater, and include slides, films, demonstrations, exhibits and live animals. This week’s topic is “Birds of Prey in Orange County.” Scott Weldy, veterinarian and director of the Orange County Bird of Prey Center, will discuss raptors and bring several along to meet audience members. Before the programs, a guided walk through the canyon begins at 7 p.m. Free. The nature center is at 6700 E. Under the Sea--Cruise to Santa Catalina Island for a one-day snorkeling expedition with Orange County Marine Institute biologists. The first date is Saturday; other cruises are planned for July 12, July 26 and Aug. 9. The boat leaves the marine institute docks at 7 a.m. and returns at 8:30 p.m. Participants will snorkel through underwater kelp forests and rocky reefs. Some snorkeling gear is provided. Catch-and-release fishing using rods and reels with barbless hooks is also offered. Cost is $40 for adults and $35 for children 9 to 12. A continental breakfast is included. Prey Date--An open house and fund-raiser to benefit the Orange County Bird of Prey Center will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Images of Nature Gallery, 240 S. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach. The gallery showcases photographs taken by wildlife biologist and conservationist Thomas Mangelsen. Information: (714) 376-9937.
