Montgomery Gets Hart Promotion

Hart High has selected Dave Montgomery as boys’ basketball coach.

Montgomery, 39, will succeed Mike May, who led the Indians to Foothill League championships four of the past five seasons before resigning two months ago.

“Dave’s got a well-rounded, strong basketball background,” Hart Principal Laurence Strauss said. “He has a strong academic background. His personal qualities are outstanding.”

Montgomery served as the girls’ junior varsity coach and girls’ varsity assistant the past four years at Hart. He was chosen over Christian Aurand, an assistant at Simi Valley, and Chris Jones, an assistant at La Canada.

Montgomery led his teams to league titles in three of his four seasons, and his record over the past three years is 59-9.

A native of Atlanta, Montgomery played basketball and baseball at Tennessee Temple University.

“He knows the game, he’s a very good teacher and he’s fundamentally sound,” Hart girls’ Coach Dave Munroe said.

Knighted again: Helen Knight won the women’s championship at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana for the 35th time in 40 years on Tuesday. Her 72-hole score of 348 beat Daryl Gerber by 13 strokes.

Knight won 32 consecutive titles from 1957-1989 and won in 1991 and 1996.

New Matadors: Three softball players, pitcher Jessica Creith, a transfer from Indiana, first baseman Maryke Don, a transfer from Consumes River College in Sacramento, and utility player Brande Wheeler of Kingsburg High, have committed to play at Cal State Northridge.

Capital gain: Anne Chatfield, a middle blocker from Sacramento City College, has transferred to Northridge.

DeShane resigns: Sharon DeShane, who coached Quartz Hill High to the Golden League girls’ track and field title this season, has resigned.

Marching orders: Meridth McKean of Simi Valley High, Ventura County champion in the girls’ discus, will attend Brigham Young on a ROTC scholarship and walk on to the track and field team.
