Panel to Examine Rival NFL Stadium Plans

Three proposals for a new NFL stadium in the Los Angeles area that have, for the past year, taken a back seat to the politically popular plan to renovate the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will have a public airing next month before a state Senate committee.
State Sen. Richard G. Polanco (D-Los Angeles), chairman of the Business and Professions Committee, is organizing the meeting of that panel’s sports subcommittee July 11 in the Ronald Reagan state building in downtown Los Angeles.
In addition to the Coliseum, which has the support of Mayor Richard Riordan and the City Council, proposals for NFL stadiums in Chavez Ravine, near the Convention Center and in Inglewood are on the agenda.
Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, the Coliseum’s chief backer, has expressed dismay at finding other stadium sites still under discussion because he insists that the Coliseum is “the only viable proposal.”
But Polanco aide Bill Mabie said “the senator wants to have a public hearing about everything that’s out there.”
