City Councilwoman Patricia A. McGuigan will stay on the Orange County Sanitation Districts Board despite an effort by two colleagues to remove her because she supported sewer fee hikes.
The City Council this week voted 5 to 2 against unseating McGuigan as the city’s representative on the board.
Councilmen Ted R. Moreno and Tony Espinosa initiated the vote to replace McGuigan on the board, saying she should have opposed the recently approved fee increases.
“I was very upset to see her increase our sanitation fees,” Moreno said. “It’s very disturbing. The increases were not justified.”
But the council majority said McGuigan made a “responsible” and “thoughtful” decision.”
McGuigan said the rate increase is necessary to improve and maintain the county sewer system. She said the increase “amounts to two cents a day.”
Under the new rate schedule, annual sewer bills for a large portion of Santa Ana and parts of Costa Mesa and Orange will rise from $83.24 this year to $145.47 in 2002 and $192.30 in 2005. Most of the sewer charges in other Orange County cities will be hiked by smaller amounts.
