Brewers’ Jaha Out for Rest of Season

Associated Press

The Milwaukee Brewer offense was jolted Tuesday with word that power-hitting John Jaha will be sidelined the rest of the season after surgery on his left shoulder.

“This stinks,” said second baseman Fernando Vina, himself recovering from an injury that sidelined him two months. “We lose all that power from our lineup.”

Surgery to repair torn cartilage in the left knee of Boston first baseman Mo Vaughn was successful, and he left the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester on crutches, but he can begin walking without them after one day. He can also begin exercises to strengthen the muscles almost immediately.

Vaughn was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and the Red Sox purchased the contract of outfielder Jesus Tavarez from triple-A Pawtucket to fill his spot on the roster. Mike Stanley has played first base the past two games.

Yankee center fielder Bernie Williams was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. With Williams out, the Yankees started Chad Curtis in center field Tuesday against the New York Mets.
