Vipers Finish Off Ice Dogs in IHL Championship Series

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — The city that owns the Stanley Cup claimed its younger brother Sunday when Rich Parent recorded his first playoff shutout for the Vipers in a 2-0 victory over the Ice Dogs in the International Hockey League championship playoffs.
Dan Kesa scored both goals for Detroit, which earned its first IHL championship in its third year in the league, and Peter Ciavaglia, the leading scorer in the playoffs with 33 points, claimed the Bud Poile Trophy as playoff MVP.
The Vipers was a 4-2 winner of the series.
“We had a great season,” Ice Dog Coach John Van Boxmeer said. “It was a special group of guys, and we had everything to be proud of. We’ll have great memories. We got beat by a better hockey team. They played a great series.
“I think Tommy Draper had an unbelievable game for us.”
Long Beach goalie Tom Draper made 32 saves and his counterpart, Parent, faced only 15 shots.
