VAN NUYS — A 25-year-old man being held in Van Nuys Jail on a narcotics charge died in custody Friday, Los Angeles police said Saturday.
The man, whose identity was being withheld pending the notification of relatives, was declared dead at Northridge Hospital Medical Center after he was moved there by paramedics from the jail dispensary.
He was arrested Thursday on suspicion of being under the influence of narcotics, and was examined by jail medical staff soon after, as police said is standard procedure in drug arrests.
At about 2:50 p.m. Friday, the man’s cellmate notified officers that he was sick, police said. The man was examined at the dispensary, then taken to the hospital.
Police released no other details, saying the death was under investigation.
