Cordero Arrested After Altercation

Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilfredo Cordero threatened to kill his wife, according to police who arrested him after an early morning altercation that left her nose bloodied, according to court testimony Wednesday.

An innocent plea was entered on Cordero’s behalf at his arraignment, when he was charged with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and threatening to commit a crime. He was released on $1,000 bail.

Kenny Kelly will play college football and professional baseball next season as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ signed Kelly to a contract that will allow him to play pro baseball in the summer and quarterback for the University of Miami the rest of the year. . . . Todd Van Poppel, the former Texas high school phenom, has agreed to a minor-league contract with his hometown Rangers. . . . Baseball officials asked a federal judge in Tampa, Fla., to move the antitrust suit filed against the sport by the New York Yankees and Adidas to New York. In 196 pages of motions, affidavits and exhibits filed late Tuesday, baseball argued that the case was improperly filed in Tampa, the hometown of Yankee owner George Steinbrenner.
