Crafts Fair a Boon for Downtown Merchants

A successful crafts fair last weekend means that the Main Street Merchants Assn. may soon have enough money to put together a brochure promoting the business district.

Mike Ruoco, a member of the merchants group, said that about 8,000 to 10,000 people visited the street last weekend to shop for arts, crafts and antiques.

“It was great. The weather was pretty mellow, and we got a lot of positive feedback from the people,” he said.

The crafts fair is one of two annual events that merchants in the historical downtown area organize to preserve and enhance Main Street. The other is the Old-Fashioned Christmas Fair.

The money raised at the two events last year paid for new benches along Main Street.

Ruoco said Tuesday that the group had not calculated how much was earned from the weekend fair. In addition to the promotional brochure, the proceeds are to go toward putting a decorative arch over one end of Main Street.
