Benes Makes His Old Team Regret Trade

SAN DIEGO — Andy Benes dominated his former team for eight innings and John Mabry extended the National League’s longest hitting streak to 20 games as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Padres, 9-1, Monday night.
Making his first start in San Diego since the Padres traded him to the Seattle Mariners on July 31, 1995, Benes (5-2) allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked two.
Benes failed to stop Tony Gwynn’s hitting streak, which reached 19, but otherwise pitched his best game of the year. The right-hander, San Diego’s first-round pick in the June 1988 draft, also singled and scored on Mabry’s two-run single in the seventh that made it 6-1.
The Cardinals were the latest team to benefit from ineffective Padre starting pitching as Ray Lankford hit a two-run homer in the first off rookie Will Cunnane (4-2), and Mike Difelice and Dmitri Young connected on back-to-back shots to open the fifth.
San Diego lost for the fourth time in five games, and for the eighth time in nine home games.
Lankford and Mabry each drove in three runs and Delino DeShields went three for five and scored twice.
In the seventh, Padre reliever Terry Burrows fielded Benes’ dribbler along the first-base line but missed making a two-handed swipe tag at the pitcher.
