34 Die as Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides

Incessant rain caused powerful landslides in the Himalayas in the northeast and killed at least 34 people, burying many victims in their sleep, authorities said. The police chief in Sikkim state, P. C. Sharma, said 38 people were injured in at least nine landslides in the state capital, Gangtok. About 1,000 people were evacuated. In one incident, a wave of mud and boulders swept a four-story building into two bungalows, crushing nine people, Sharma said.
