Pool, School Safety on Tap for Meeting

The City Council and the Irvine Unified School District board will hold their annual joint meeting Monday.
The two governing bodies will discuss a proposal to divide the anticipated $10-million cost of rehabilitating the Heritage Park Aquatics Complex. They will also hear a report on the progress of a program that the district and the Irvine Police Department started in 1996 to promote campus safety.
The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 1 Civic Center Plaza.
The city and the school district have had a long-standing agreement to work together on issues that concern students and the community at large, Irvine Councilman Greg Smith said.
“The city is in need of a new pool complex and locker facilities, and the school district also is in need of a new pool, a locker facility and a gymnasium,” Smith said. “Maybe we can combine forces on this to see if we can design a complex that meets both of our needs.”
School and police officials will update the council and school board on the Operation Safe Campus program. In 1996, the city agreed to spend $45,000 a year to expand Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE, programs into middle schools if the district would agree to hire a full-time child welfare officer to handle attendance and truancy problems.
